Idea 1: Wands
Obviously Harry Potter was the main film to focus on due to the constant use of the wands. As I gathered some images, I found that it would be increasingly more difficult to peruse this idea, just due to the fact that it has been done before in Harry Potter, and being set in London it will make it look like I have copied the idea.
Therefore I started to look into Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, and I begun to develop on the idea, I thought that I could maybe set the scene in the woods and achieve a more creepy scene. Then to get an idea of the work that goes into a VFX project I had a look at the breakdowns on Harry Potter and the deathly hallows to get some ideas. |

Idea 2: Woods
Afterwards I then decided to stick to the idea of filming in the woods as I thought I could get some really cool shots. Therefore I took to the internet to find a bit of inspiration. I found this piece done by a student for their third year VFX project. I am using this piece as a reference as I love the simple yet effective camera pan as well as the beautiful colour grading they achieve.

Environment Research
On the 12th October I went to my local woods to explore the surroundings, and investigate if it would be a suitable area to shoot my scene. Upon my findings I found that although Ruislip could possibly be my final destination, it wasn't ideal, due to the complicated shapes and arrangement of the trees. This would make it significantly more difficult as I would have to re-model the environment in Maya. As well this I made quite a crucial mistake in these shots as I didn't take the lighting into consideration so I ended with sunlight bleeding through the trees, which made the next to impossible task of turning the shot from day to night.

Black Park (Pinewood Studios) |
After visiting Black Park this week I instantly knew that it was the perfect location for my task. It consists of hundreds of Coniferous pine trees which tower of the surroundings creating a really atmospheric effect! These trees make my job of recreating the environment a lot easier as they are not as diverse and complicated as seen in Ruislip woods.
Therefore this weekend I am going to visit Black Park again with the BlackMagic Camera and get my final footage for this project so I can begin to integrate my 3D model of a drone and its surroundings. |

Shot 1: Still Camera Shot |
This the original plate I filmed with a Cannon 5D MKIII placed on a steady Tripod. I decided that I didn't want to do a sky replacement because i felt that they seemed to be too fake for a photo realistic shot, therefore I chose to rotopaint out the background to populate the white space with more leaves to achieve a more naturalistic effect. I also merged in a couple more trees from other footage just so my scene looks fuller. The Node graph below shows the steps I took to achieve this look... |

This is the final edit for the back plate, here I have done the the Day to Night conversion completed in DaVinci Resolve.

This is the Original Plate which I recorded to use for my Moving Camera Shot. The Idea is that the Drone will be sitting in the centre of the screen while the camera will pan around it.
